Many people discover that do it yourself swing set kits are a great way to provide hours of uninhibited fun and entertainment for their children. It is sometimes difficult for little ones to determine just how close they can approach the swing when another child is taking their turn.
Building a border for your do it yourself wooden swing set is a simple way to establish a safe play zone for children. The border will clearly define the play zone from the safe zones. It will alert your children that they must exercise caution when entering this area.
You have three basic options for border material. Wood is a good material, because it is eco-friendly and doesn’t cause burns due to overheating in the sun. Redwood or cedar borders are the best wood specimens for play zones. Recycled plastic borders are also eco-friendly and available in numerous colors. They are a weather-resistant material and a good maintenance-free option for busy families. Rubber is not as widely used as the other materials, but it is weather-resistant and very durable.
Calculate the dimensions of the play zone. Your border will extend approximately 12 inches above ground. Make sure that your border is a safe distance from all playground equipment to avoid a tripping hazard as children exit or enter the swings. Identify the outline of your play zone with stakes installed at each corner. Attach string to the stakes. Swap your stakes with anchor points. You will use these anchor points to attach your wood, plastic or rubber planks.
Larger play zones will require the use of more anchor joints and brackets. Install the planks into the anchor joints and points. You can fill the play zone with your choice of rubber mulch, wood chips or sand.
